Live Music: James Cook

James Cook is a Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter whose new album, under the Captain’s Audio Project moniker, is titled Waiting for the Moon. The record, which was produced by Mike Danner, draws upon a broad spectrum of musical influences, spotlighting Cook’s diverse musical interests as well as the wide range of lyrical subjects he draws inspiration from, whether time spent out in nature or the fortunes (and misfortunes) that day-to-day living brings. In addition to his solo work, Cook remains a member of the venerable Portland act Trashcan Joe.

Live Music: The BrazilTones

Live Music: The BrazilTones

New on the Portland music scene, The BrazilTones are Deborah Bayardino on vocals and Ronnie Robins on guitar and vocals. The BrazilTones embrace the beauty, poetic lyrics and rhythmic wonder of Bossa Nova, Samba and MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira). They also perform original songs composed by Robins.

Deborah Bayardino was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She grew up with Bossa Nova, MPB and Jazz music pulsing through her house and veins. She briefly studied piano, voice and music theory while graduating from the Angel Vianna School of Dance, Movement, and Arts in Rio. In 2007, she moved to the United States, where she settled in Portland, Oregon. In Portland, she began her professional life teaching the Alexander Technique, a self-development skill that teaches people to identify and change habits that cause tension and inefficient movement. It was at this time that Robins began lessons with Bayardino. Little did they know that years later they would be playing and singing together in The BrazilTones.

Ronnie Robins was born in Brooklyn, New York and is a veteran of the Portland music scene. In the early 2000's his band Bossamba was a fixture on the local club and festival scene. In 2001, Robins released "Bossamba", a twelve song CD of all original music, influenced by his love affair with the music of Brazil. The pairing of Bayardino and Robins is a musical marriage made in Brazilian heaven. When you add percussionist Brian Davis ( Pink Martini, Dub Squad and countless other bands) to the mix, well there's no telling what may happen. Davis becomes a BrazilTone when he gets a break from his busy touring schedule or is not spending time in Brazil studying, teaching and playing with different groups and ensembles.

Live Music-Freddy Trujillo

Live Music-Freddy Trujillo

Simi Valley, California-born, and Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Freddy Trujillo is self-releasing his fourth solo album, I Never Threw A Shadow At it, May 24th. A very personal record based around Chicano experiences, it is the follow-up to 2022’s Sketch of a Man. Trujillo, who is also the bass player for The Delines and Richmond Fontaine, delivers an honest storyteller’s look at his life growing up in Southern California as a Chicano.

The record is so personal that the album’s title track, “I Never Threw A Shadow At It,” details a situation where Trujillo called the Los Angeles Police Department when someone attempted to steal his car, only to be treated like the criminal because of the color of his skin when the police showed up.

“I usually write songs about my life or memories,” he says of the song. “[This song] is about a personal incident I had with the LAPD in 1992. All songs, except ‘Corpus Christi’ and ‘Remember’ are personal songs or about someone that is close to me.”

Fueled by the 70s Nuyorican-soul vibe of the title track, a highlight of the album for Trujillo, and one of his proudest moments, I Never Threw A Shadow At It blends folk, Chicano-rock, and a lot of heart throughout its ten tracks. Featuring every member of The Delines on the record, and engineered and co-produced by The Delines’ Cory Gray at his Old Unconscious Studios, the album will appeal to fans of Trujillo’s other band, while sounding nothing like The Delines.
